Acupuncture needles are very slender (slightly thicker than the human hair) and cause very little, if any, discomfort. Healing Meridians uses only the finest quality sterile, single-use , disposable, stainless steel needles. Dr. Powell gently inserts the needle just below the surface of the skin. Needling sensation is usually felt as heaviness, tingling or warmth at the point of insertion. This indicates that the Qi has been successfully reached and treatment is working. Most patients find a treatment to be very relaxing and refreshing.

The goal of Acupuncture is to restore and maintain overall health, balance, and wellness. Acupuncture is used successfully in conjunction with conventional medicine. We cooperate with other health providers and do not recommend altering medications or other therapies without consulting the physician or provider. Insurance often covers acupuncture treatments.

With a 3000-year history, Chinese acupuncture has gained a powerful foothold in the United States. The technique is recognized by the World Health Organization for diseases of the digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, neurological, reproductive, and other systems. Medical professionals such as Douglas Powell, MD, perform acupuncture on patients who want to restore and maintain their health beyond that offered by traditional Western medicine.

Acupuncture works by activating the flow of energy in the body. This energy travels in pathways called meridians, which are like rivers that supply energy to all the organs and tissues. If this energy is blocked, the result is illness or pain. Energy is released and health is restored by placing needles at the points of the body where the flow of energy is obstructed.

Dr. Powell decided to learn about acupuncture because he wanted to do more for his patients than traditional medicine would permit. Medicine may cure a disease, but may not maintain overall health. Patients, even though their disease was cured, still did not “feel well.” Acupuncture offered Dr. Powell an opportunity to take medicine that one step further.

In addition to acupuncture, Dr. Powell performs Reiki, an energetic technique that transfers healing energy through the palms of the hand, and zero balancing, a gentle massage to restore balance between the body energies within the physical body. Dr. Powell performs acupuncture, Reiki, and zero balancing on men and women of any age. The goal of acupuncture is to restore and maintain overall health. This is different from the goal of traditional Western medicine, which is to attack a specific medical condition with a standard treatment protocol. Dr. Powell, an instructor at Helms Medical Institute (which teaches and certifies physicians to perform acupuncture), stresses the importance of the interview with the patient. This personal interaction provides the basis for the acupuncture treatment. For example, 10 patients with a migraine headache will receive 10 different acupuncture treatments even though they all have the same medical problem. The treatment for each person is unique because each person is unique. In other words, Dr. Powell treats the patient, not the ailment.
